Commonwealth Foundation Director welcomes you to the People’s Forum blog

If you are here, it’s likely you are aware of the forthcoming ‘Commonwealth People’s Forum’ taking place in Uganda between 18 – 22nd November 2007.

Here’s Dr Mark Collins, Director of the Commonwealth Foundation with a few thoughts of his own on what’s happening. If you can’t see the video below, click here.

You can download a transcript in Word or PDF here.

Things are going to be a little different this year. For the first time, we are opening up the forum to the entire Commonwealth.

British Council is supporting a new online initiative aimed at creating a global discussion on the issues that affect us all. A team of Ugandans are being trained to bring you both happenings from the event and their own opinions on the issues.

The issues will include:

  • Environment and Natural Resources
  • Governance, Participation and Human Rights
  • Economic Development
  • Education for Transformation
  • Health
  • Culture, Creativity and Identity

Unlike standard reports, they will aim to make these issues come alive using multiple media. This blog will include text updates, audio and video interviews, photography, and more.

But, the real benefit is that there’s an opportunity to make your views heard on the issues that matter to you. Each update (or post) offers the chance to make your views known through the ‘Join the Debate – Read Comments’ option featuring at the bottom of each post. It’s your chance to engage with others around the Commonwealth and inform us of what matters to you.

New posts will go up in advance of the event and we hope you’ll join us on this exciting journey. Feel free to sign up for immediate updates as they happen by entering your email address in the box provided on the right hand side.

Thank you and we look forward to your joining us in Uganda!

One of the most important bill that needs to be passed in all the commonwealth nations is the writer,s protection bill. I appeal to the UK Home Office to please accept the bill and approve it in the parliament.

I hope this event will help to bring the people’s of the Commnowealth closer together. As a UK citizen I believe that we have more in common with our Commonwealth partners than with our European partners. I believe that we should not confine ourselves to the narrow confines of Europe but immerse ourselves in the diversity that is the Commonwealth.

European attitudes are narrow. For instance regarding India as a potential threat as she develops economically. India is a stable democracy with a people who frequently show great generosity of spirit.

Surely it is in the interests of the world that we reach out to each other, not form ourselves into defensive blocks.

    Hi All-

Interesting comments from a British Cousin.

You betcha India is on ‘watch’, especially as China is in meltdown over lack of ‘due dillegance’ of quality control. India is quite capable of replacing China for cheap goods flooding into North America, through Ports in British Columbia, Canada. My home Province, that now has 2 thriving deep-water ports. The newest of which, Prince Rupert, is wholly owned by Cosco Shipping-ie Chinese Gov’t.

India has also formed into Indie-China Oil Giant and happily helping to drive-out Canadian oil from South-America, along with keeping Oil Prices into an almost impossible World Price. Which is very good for Western Canada, as ‘we’ are getting to be close to 50% of total American Imports of Oil. Right now ‘only’ 40%.

Very easy to do, as ‘we’ just have to find/develope more and build pipelines. It took just 18 Mos. to build a 2100 mile pipeline from NG Rich Northern British Columbia to Chicago NG Network. And this at ‘only’ Mile 95 of Alaska Highway. Fort St. John,BC.

Anyway, Cousin Allen, watch carefully how Canada reacts and performs at the Commonwealth Conference.

Australia almost got a ‘divorce’ from ‘Mother Britain’.

2/3 of Canada, living East of Saskatchewan, want the same. In order to join into The EU.

The 1/3, population wise, where l live are very strong for Commonwealth/Nafta, as ‘we’ are getting very rich and comfortable, from playing World trade Advantage from both.

Australia came to the same mind-set, as ‘they’ are also into ASEA, similar to NAFTA, which also includes USA/Canada. Australia is also wanting to join into NAFTA. Australia, like Western Canada, is a Global Resource Giant. Just with different products. Grumps

    Hi All-

    Really Doc.Mark???

Then ‘why’ are you not interjecting into Your Forum???

North America is REJECTING most of the ‘woes’ of Africa.

WE did try, and got a ‘bloody nose’ for our efforts.

Not just in Rowanda, but EVERY DAY, in UN.

When you are talking ‘economics’ for
Ailing Africa, then YOU Activists had better control your media ‘buddy’s’, as well as get some ‘economics’ into African Commonwealth.

Are you wanting to talk about the Wheat Growing Area of Africa???? Almost as good as Western canada.

GONE. Nations can ‘nationalize’ finite resources. Just take over wells/holes in ground etc.

Not the same with Global Farming, who need expensive equiptment, and TALENT, to survive.

No doubt Sudan will be part of discussions.

Whoa on partner. Talisman Oil (Canadian) was accused of aiding ‘terrorists’. Talisman sold to ChinIndie. The (Genocide-not allowed in UN)fighting is getting worse.
Want to to talk further about ‘genocide’ with China selling arms/ammo to both sides??? AK-47/RPG’s are not sold by “Evil America”, BUT, the ammo is made /sold by Canadian Firms. Canada sells trillions of bullets/yr.

Talisman was also into building a NG pipeline from Bolivia to Pacific Ocean. ‘Forced to sell’, due to Echo-Freak Pressures. China is BUILDING, this pipeline.

China DOES pay full value for Resources they buy from NA Firms. Grumps

We in BUILD are looking forward to this event. BUILD is a UK-based coalition of international agencies working across the Commonwealth promoting the power of international community based “twinning” partnerships between towns and villages; health care (e.g.hospitals), educational (e.g. schools), faith-based, youth, local authority and other institutions and organisations.

The power of these community partnerships can be immense in terms of developing mutual understanding and respect and can lead to personal and professional development. They can also be immense fun!

We are running a workshop at the Commonwealth People’s Forum “Realising Potential through Common Health and Wellbeing” and will be focussing on educational, health care and faith based partnerships across the Commonwealth. We hope to encourage the Commonwealth Heads of Government to support these community-based linking initiatives which can promote better education, health and wellbeing and contribute to realising the MDGs across the world.

As Archbishop Desmond Tutu said in his address when he launched our Toolkit for Linking at the Commonwealth Secretariat in London in June 2007 (see our website www.build-online.org.uk to hear his speech and see the Toolkit)”All human beings need other human beings in order to be human. I wouldn’t know how to speak as a human being, to walk as a human being, how to think as a human being except I learn it from other human beings!”

We must connect across the Commonwealth.

Nick, this is very interesting. You have quoted what we in Africa are using and fighting for. Community spirit - working through human beings. That spirit was killed by the masters of the day during colonialism. Many people go out to study and live in the western world and only come back not being able to speak their language, leave alone co-exist with their neighbours! Shame upon the brainwashing that those living in those countries brings along. Mark you, China and India are moving at that pace because they still believe in communities. Communities speak to one another and help maintain their values. Let us wait to hear comments from other people visiting this blog.

    Hi All-

    “Oh spare my sensitivity, Mari”.

Africa is a ‘basket case’, and getting worse. Just for my interst, only, where do you, generally speaking, live in Africa???

Obviously you are well educated and either own, or have access to a computer. l have 3.

In a recent Canadian Poll, Western Canada has the highest ownership of computers in OECD, partly through work, and more so through Parents who understand the use and advancement of ‘child technology’ that any computer system gives to our young. My own sons started with computers, with Atari Games, at age 3. They are now 28/30. l had twins.

SO WHAT-Africa got rid of “Colonials”. What did you gain???

The likes of Rowanda, that is making Western Canadian Famers ‘richer’ as Global Wheat Growing Areas are dec reasing?? The USA is heading to growing Corn, for Ethonal. Bread prices in North America are rising. Mexico has no idea how to counter corn-flour decrease, as they depend on American Production. Fast-foods in NA can call on Canadian Production.

    Want to talk:: Diamonds?? Gold???

Canada was really hit hard over ‘natural fur’ boycott.

NOW, this has ’shifted’ to “Blood Diamonds”, which Western Canada has 3 producers with “Tiffany’s/Harry Winston” as Owned/Directors of 1. ( l am pushing, through ‘blogs’, to get this ‘group’ to advertise through Academy Awards. As they did through ’60’s’.)

Only in this case, to promote ‘Polar Bear Diamonds-computer etched’ to ‘authenticate’.

Does your ‘new saviour’ Chin-Indie, even care where their diamond needs come from?? And what ‘human cost’????

AND, with HIV killing off males in Africa, just who is actually down ‘in the pits’????

l have just read in ‘Canadian National Post’ (Newspaper-also on-line) that The Congo is heading toward Nationalization of Mineral Deposits.

    GO FOR IT AFRICA.

    l also have another thought.

Africa is outside NA. As such, you’all havenot a currency advantage that exists within NA.

SO Mari, as you prepare for Commonwealth Conference, no doubt on Tax-Payers Monies, keep in mind that USA isnot involved, BUT, The Rich Part of Canada-IS

As you mingle with Canadians, most of whom will want to speak ‘French’, do some homework and understand the ‘Political/Geographic/Eonomic difference in Canada’ that changes at Ontario/Manitoba Border.

Just for a reference, Mari, The Canadian Oil Sands are 2,000 miles wide and 3 miles deep.

    Really big hole!!! Grumps

Grumps, Africa is full of hope, that is why there is a second scramble for it. The Indian government will give US$250 million towards a fund to boost biofuel production. China gives Central Africa US$15 million debt relief aid. And more… As you can see, this time there are new players. It gives us in Africa a lot of hope that we have a new set of players to help us move on with others. In the policies set by the western world, they play the game with a different set of rules - the old western world says, you need me more than I do, where as the new players make it clear that we need each other to survive. Now we have global warming biting hard, and this is where the developed world should encourage more people (call them communities) to protect their habitats. When one part of the world is hit hard, by climate changes, a brother in another part of the world can take some of that weight by cleaning up the carbon emissions using their habitat. By the way Africa still has somewhere to keep our brothers from the northern hemisphere from the wrath of nature. And the north should encourage communities, it is the only place you want to come for holiday. For example some western countries have of late experienced school shootings by young men, just because they lack the community spirit of togetherness. What happens when a young child disappears in a neighbourhood in the western world? They all drum up support using their communities to look for the lost child. Why do we have many cameras on the streets in the western world? There is no one looking after the others back using the community spirit.

What I agree with you is that there are some basket cases, but having a basket case with a light of hope is better than being selfish or self centre. CHOGM should address the best practices of handling dissenting countries and basket cases. Like embracing Islam countries community ways and accepting their good values! Of course, finding ways of not taking on the bad ways. Like listening to the views of the countries or better still letting them come up with their own solutions where possible.

    What do you think Grumps?

    Hi All-

WOW. This Forum is sure getting interesting. A ‘Western-Canadian Welcome’ to new posters, and from more Commonwealth Countries.

Ono, The Commonwealth isnot supposed to be ‘perfect’.

WE are a collection of “British Empire Revolution” that uses Trade and ‘common values’ as a basis of OUR Existance.

l am a strong believer in ‘Commonwealth’, as l should be, as British Columbia, my Birth Province, has always been a key component in both “H’Empire” and now Commonwealth. BC Provincial Flag shows ‘Union Jack’. Very similar to Hawaii. Alberta dropped this, as has Saskatchewan.

Ono, l am sorry to say that your troubles, and those in African Commonwealth, are:: YOUR PROBLEM.

As l was thinking how to reply to ISLAMIC mari, l cannot ignore that Western- canada is desperately STEALING South African trained Doctors, by the hundreds. Just imagine a Family that even doesnot know what ’snow’ is, moving to North BC, that measures ’snow’ in FEET. Look up Prince George, BC on your map. There are 4 SA Doctors living 110 miles North of this City, MacKenzie. 4 Doctors who have ‘only’ 5,000 patients. My current City, Calgary,AB. in which l live, has 250,000+ without a ‘real family doctor’. l drive 2 1/2 hours South to my own Family Doctor.

While l was pondering how to reply to mari, l was reminded that the worst of Commonwealth Nations live in WARM Climates.

    How is this possible???

Canada/Australia have the worst climatic conditions, outside of The UK.

Last year l bought, cash, $700 worth of Michelin snow tires for my 2006 Mitsubishi Lancer. JUNK. l bought better, Bridgestone snow tires at same cost,at start of October. Snow Tires can be compared to those needed to drive ‘bush’ in Africa.

l threw this ‘tidbit’ in to show that Living isnot easy anywhere in Commonwealth.

    Yes Africa has ‘problems’

    However, how many are ’self-inflected’???

Canada is 4,000 miles wide, and almost as much deep.

Hells Bells, just the Southern Corner of British Columbia has more Land Mass than the UK. Population of BC-Just under 4 million.

Take a good look,at yourselves, Africans, and ask “Canada” how we can do so well, while Africa is still not much beyond ’stone-age’?? Grumps

I refer you back to my original blog from BUILD (Building Understanding through International Links for Development)which encourages communities (towns, schools, hospitals, local authorities, faith, sports, cultural, youth and social organisations) across the Commonwealth to link up for mutual learning, professional development and fun. My personal passion comes from a 25 year relationship between my community of Marlborough in UK (pop 7,000) and the Muslim fishing community of Gunjur (pop 15,000) in The Gambia. 1200 people have crossed the divide to live in each other’s homes, to be educated at both ends, to be involved in community development projects at both ends and to be personally enriched and empowered.

This is what the Commonwealth should be about - bringing the ‘commonwealth wealth’ of its people together. What potential for peace!!

OPEN LETTER TO HER MAJESTY QUEEN ELIZABETH II

    Dear Madam,

Reference is made to the forthcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government
Meeting (CHOGM) scheduled for late November in Uganda, better referred to as
the Pearl of Africa. The event will reportedly host 53 heads of states and
over 1.6 billion eyes will reportedly focus on this landlocked East African
    nation.

Her majesty, am completely and totally disgusted especially after rumours
circulated in Kampala recently that you will address Parliament, the
legislative arm of government in only 3-minutes (180 seconds). Mind you our
Parliament had about 309 legislators, representing various constituencies
    and interest groups.

If am to go by the statements from Uganda’s foreign affairs minister, Mr.
Sam Kutesa that “because of the tight schedules, the Queen will address
Parliament for only three minutes,” then am still in a state of desparation.
Her majesty, am kindly requesting you to make it at least a 30-minute
    address to Uganda’s 8th Parliament.

My justification for this request letter are well stipulated. For instance,
at the moment, we have pressing issues before Parliament like the much-hyped
Domestic Relations Bill, land issues, grievances related to the absurd
investors who have ripped the nation of billions and certainly the northern
insurgency tops Parliaments plenary sessions. Also, this would be an
opportunity for you to listen to how fluent our legislators have mastered
    your language (English).

Finally, am reliably informed that you will arrive in the country on
November 21, ahead of the main Chogm meeting slated for November 23 to 25.
On behalf of other Ugandans and on my own, safe journey to the Pearl of
    Africa.

    Hi All-

My ‘Good Wife’-aka LL, has asked me to be ‘gentle’ to my ‘Commonwealth Brothers/Sisters’.

YES-INDEED-The Trade, and other’s, is important from Established Democracies to those who have struggles.

BUT-Remember, that “MOther Parliament” was estabished BEFORE ‘upstart’ Republican USA.

However, l do find ‘Great Fault’ with my African Bros/Sis who havenot found a path between both.

What l find, very frustrating, is that African Nations cannot find a way to become like ‘Canada’.

You all want to be “Africans”. SO GO TO WORK and create THIS.

Anyway, any “Message to Her Majesty” should be adressed as such. AND though Diplomatic Circles. THAT is why you pay for ‘expensive’ “slugs’ who live in London, UK.

British Columbia/Alberta have ‘Trade Houses’ in London,UK. BC has ‘Trade Houses’ in Hong Kong, and Sidney,AU., as well. The ‘Trade Houses-UK’ are to woo Europe Business to MOVE to Western-Canada. “North American Gateway to Asia”.

Western-Canada has a ‘Consulate’ in Washington,DC. Inside ‘Canadian Embassy’, no less.LOLOLOL. ECONOMIC POWER.

Anyway, as the time for “Uganda Spotlight Approaches”, l would like feedback from ‘Little People’, like myself, who have no intention of going anywhere on “Gov’t Expense Account”.

Who is Grumps??? Just doing well, within Western-Canada. According to ‘Stats-Canada’, l am 60% income above most Canadians. My aim is to be 80% above ‘most Canadians’. Not that hard.

l can easily spend more $/mo
than most Africans can earn in a year.

What is really ‘wrong’ with this “statement???”

Where l live, or “Dumb Gov’t in Africa Nation”. Grumps

  • Posted by Hope Clinic Lukuli - 14th November

The Peoples Forum and the Commonwealth Foundation began in January looking for workshops to ‘unlease the potential’ among CSO. Our goal remainss to discuss the concept that individuals are philanthropic trustees living in a community but not yet fully active in supporting the needs of their community to develop.

The rationale is to utilise the un-tapped skills of people living in the community to improve health and other services. To recognise and mobilise these skills to engage with government and other NGO to sustain and grow a CSO to the benefit of the whole community.

By meeting together we can share examples from government, large NGO and a small CSO to demonstrate that each member of a community has an inherent skill which collectively they can apply to achieve improvements in essential services. This encourages individuals and small CSO to consider their potential comparative advantage and apply it to identify and engage with larger NGO seeking collaborations. To discuss and identity participants’ inherent skills and reveal the need for them in the successful growth and implementation of health and other essential services.

In Kampala, the examples include Hope Clinic Lukuli that was providing essential health services to a low income community, which supported its work but felt disempowered to actively help sustain it. The CSO did not appreciate its potential to engage with peer and larger CSO and NGO which were willing to support its work. The CSO felt detached from Government yet was an example of the public-private partnership in health provision which was a keystone of national policy.
Through community self-realisation, a group without medical backgrounds was formed and used their skills to develop the CSO, identify and form linkages and expand the services available to the community. The concept of philanthropic trustees was successful as it requires individuals to recognise their comparative advantage (skill or talent) which is worth more to an organisation than a donation of money or materials. As the provision of the skill may seem easy to the individual, no payment is required and it is therefore philanthropic. As the individual is not employed by the organisation, but its success is of deep importance, they become a trustee. As a person promoting success without financial reward, a strong position if formed to encourage linkages and realise the potential in others to work together forming synergy.

The strong Link to the CPF and CHOGM is through the sub-themes of ‘governance, participation and human rights’ and ‘health’.
The creation of linkages between CSO for philanthropic purposes rather than financial gain is developed from business networking. This approach realises the potential that individuals hold but is not utilised as it is not part of their day to day employment or personal economic activities. Using marketing techniques to effectively research a need for collaboration and present the CSO correctly to achieve that linkage.
The relevance to policy development is that it encourages willingness among Government and large NGO to look at CSO around them and hear their requests for collaborations. That many of these collaborations are more cost effective than green-field expansion which requires greater donor funding and also reduces the likelihood of duplication of effort.
The chance for the PF and CF to debate this is that it would promote the benefit of networking at all tiers in a country. It encourages people to look through the apparent barrier of CSO only needing help from technical experts. To recognise that a broad range of skills and talents are required by all level of organisations and that an individual with those talents should feel encouraged to realise their potential by offering them philanthropically, alongside their normal economic activity.

Lets hope that the selected CF workshops can cover these aspects rather than purely repeating the established and institutionalised responses.

As the travel days approach, please keep posting into this forum (Blog??).

And, ask other delegates to add comments as The Conference Unfolds.

In addition, l invite, no-l donot own/run/ webmaster any forum- Gentle Posters to find World Crossing/MSN Web-sites that have Canadian Content and enter your comments in several-LOLOL-sites that deal with world/economic affairs.

l donot know if my own E-mail address is showing so-for those those who want to converse with me directly::

l donot worry about virus and such,as l have ample safeguards in place. Besides, LL handles the E-mails so only 1 computer could be struck.

l would like some direct ‘comments’ on how The Canadian Delegates are both received/listen to the plights of African Commonwealth.

In some Canadian Forums, and in Media, Canada has been chastized over our CEDA etc., along with UN NGO’S (Yeah right-no ‘Political Crap’.) LOLOLOL. The UN is so corrupt that it is barely functioning. At least, in the ‘minds’ of a growing number of North American Populace.

l do have a serious question.

How much of Africa is aware that China is poisoning children, through faulty manufacturing practices???

So much so, that when Chinese Made Toys came under NA Standards’ Testing, almost 1 million items, and growing, are pulled from X-mas Shopping Shelves.

E-Bay has been ‘ordered’ to not offer any sale of these banned toys, within their sales system. They do carry Logo’s of Mattel/Toys R Us/Wal-mart.

China is very ‘upset’. LOLOLOL So They should be. Grumps

    Hi all,
I really want to thank the British council for giving us this opportunity to be heard in this coming ghogm.Bravo.

My debate will go straight away to the point of “Education for transformation.” I will appreciate that many commonwealth countries have offered scholarships to many of its members but my concern is what have they done to educate the disabled or children with disabilities?
I will focus much on Uganda my home country where I am living and have experience. Whenever scholarships are advertised, they only consider science education and education as a profession is ignored. In Uganda we have few trained manpower to handle the field of special education needs, but no commonwealth country has accepted to sponsor some students to take up the profession with an aim of helping the disabled. Now should I assume that Education for transformation minus the disabled? So please those who can afford please help because this course is not offered anywhere in Uganda and its expensive abroad yet those of us who are interested can not afford to sponsor ourselves. I will be grateful to receive your response on this matter.I thank you.

  • Posted by Eliezer Titus - 16th November

I thank the British Council for the Endeavour’s to help people at grass root levels participate in this forth coming commonwealth heads of government meeting as part of the strategies to develop commonwealth countries. My name is Eliezer Titus, Chairperson of Eliezah Foundation Initiative.

In the course of development of Uganda, so many strategies could have been taken in different parties of economic, social and political courses but, the more important part that will help this country develop further in the near and far future is the young generation.

Youth in Uganda have been attended to least and children are handled with care but at very low levels meaning that most of them are left out. Even though the number that has been helped is high, but the one that is demanding is higher. We should continue fighting for the children through provision of Education, political interventions, economic strategies, child care mobilisation, human rights, and literalisation processes. Youth need intervention in all corners of development of the country i.e. politically, economically and socially. In research made by Eliezah Foundation Initiative, youths initiatives in the government have not been effective to grass root levels because they are led by people who are above teenage and that has made them inevitable for provision of adequate necessities to grass roots and even the teenage generations in rule have kept a blind eye in issues to address at grass roots even though they exist. The National Youth Council at Ministry of gender labor and social development has tried its effectiveness in youth related issues but looks to lack adequacy of information regarding grass roots youths and methodologies to handle such issues and that implies to the National Children’s Council at the ministry. Special thanks to both councils for the endeavors it puts in to try and address youth and child’s related issues to delegates in government but as the government fails to turn back to these issues, it shows inadequacy of information and stages to stand and raise to accomplish such issues. We at Eliezah Foundation Initiative, have tried to research, find, help where we can, work together, find solutions and talk to youths and children who are in different stages and situations and have come up with many ways, and conclusions with child and youths related issues. We kindly call for the Government, the public and all responsible sections of development of the country to accept, encourage and mobilise youth and child growth strategies and work plans for the development of our Country.

HI ALL of guys: my comment related to education for transformation whenever th e british advertises for scholarships it is always about sciences which are given priority ,does it mean that we training for scientific break through ? in any case these students who get the sponsorship to study abroad more often than not do they come to practice here ,for the case of where uganda where i live these students end up practicing in these countries where they are trained because of some inducements and so forth they end being trained for uk and eourope.now were is the education for transformation destined to take us? AND once but not leat where are we heading in aworld without entrepreneurs? some thing has got change . the writer is a student of entreprenuership and small biz at makerere university businees school.thank

    Hello

What do you think about this? When it happens?

  • Posted by onono patrick - 17th November

Ihope the coming of commonwealth to uganda will be an open opportunity for ugandans who wish to further their education and get sholarship to persue their education.

    Hi All-

Exactly. However, once these students get free of Africa and really get to believe that the stuff they see on TV/movie screens is ‘real’, then why would they even think of going back????

However, the cultural loss is very severe as well.

‘Westerners’ operate on a faster pace and a narrow work ethic. Workplaces donot tolerate ‘Religious Rights’. Work like the rest of us, or go back where you came from.

Then there is the abrupt change of climate, especially hard to adjust to when thinking of coming to Canada. Winter isnot joke. Some years are warm, while other years can be very cold and expensive.

When l ‘lived bush’, yes, outside of major cities is considered rural or even bush, the further North one lives, it cost me over $600/yr-each- to buy winter clothes for my 3 sons. Schools closed at -35C-Daytime temp. Did the children stay indoors?? Hell no. Snow that ‘cool’ is great for sliding and skiing.

Meanwhile, the large sawmills kept working, so kids just adjusted as adults were doing. Diesel Engines donot like below -20C, so those with diesel either had many engine heating devices, or kept them running.

Europe isnot as bad for ‘cool weather, but, Ice Storms can occur and temps drop., along with the chaos that hits mass transportation. Transportation Problems are a valid excuse for being late for work, or even not able to get there. Excuses donot translate into ‘Hours worked=Pay Cheque’.

One thing, Canadians have learned from Research provided by African Immigrants, the Human Body needs 20 minutes of actual sunshine, everyday. LOLOL

l left Vancouver, after 40 days of continuous rain. So l ended up in ‘Mountains’. So far North that even seeing ‘daylight’, was just a matter of hours, nevermind ’sunshine’. Except when ‘Deep Cold Hits’, which means ‘Chilly’ and intense sunshine. l call it: The Dreaded Siberian High, as this deep cold air originates in Siberia. The Texans call this ‘Blue Northerner’ as Texas can get down to below 0F. l had a frantic E-mail, from a Net-pal, living in New Mexico, USA, that needed ’snow clothes’ for her children-Cheap. l sent her two snowsuits, at my cost, for just $100. CAD. Her cost was over $150.US/each. l had the same frantic phone call from my daughter, living in Downtown Vancouver, who wanted to know which store was selling ‘reasonable cost’ snow clothes. She drove over 1 hour, each way, through heavy city traffic, to get to the 1 store that had ‘non-designer clothing’. Going by Transit, would have taken 2 hours, each way.

l have a sister, living Very Far North, Inuvik, NWT. For three weeks there is no daylight at all. She also gets 3 weeks of continuous sunshine. Living inside Arctic Circle is ‘interesting’, but very rewarding, income wise.

l do notice the ‘frustation’ of African Bros/Sisters over “education for Massess”. Hells Bells People, Canada pioneered the use of communication satellittes, and North has access to both comunication and live video learning.

Last June, University of Athabaska,Alberta, held a ‘Class Graduation Ceremony’ for Degree Graduates, in Edmonton, Alberta. The campus is 300 miles North, of Edmonton. Over 500 Grads met each other for 1st time, in these 4 year programmes. The entire learning was done through Internet. Grads came from all over ‘Global Village’.

Mexico is starting a similar programme by providing ‘very cheap laptops’, designed by MSN/Intel.

In ‘Political Forums’ this programme was classed by “Lefties” as “Rich exploiting Poor”.

l shot-them-down when l countered that this project, designed for Grd.8 (NA Standards), also gave younger sibilings access to computers.

What “Lefties” donot understand, is that computers are a huge learning tool.

To even use a computer requires:: Reading Ability.

Then comes ‘keyboarding’, which requires THOUGHT, translated into ‘language on screen’.

2 years before l could even buy a computer, my 3 year old twins, were playing video games.

When l did my 1st computer, my sons werenot that interested in what ‘dad’ was doing-just spending time in Political Forums.

    NOW:::

Oldest son is on an Oil Survey Crew, complete with satellitte Laptop Computer. Needed to send reports to ‘Boss’ 800 miles South.

Second son is in a co’ that requires ‘programming of machine computers’.

Third son is shipper/receiver for a Small Hong-Kong, by Canadian Standards, Owned Import/Export Co. that ships Garmmet Industry Goods all over North America. Although this Co. is not even close to being ‘computerized’, he has to alert shippers, via various data programmes, what his CO. requires, and prints out Waybills that DO MEET computerized Supply Management Systems. My sons still just ‘play games’ at ‘Home Time’.

My point(!) is that Africa has to stop playing your ’silly’ games and get serious about providing, what North America/Europe has done about ‘Computer Age Learning’.

l read about Uganda. Apparently very rich in Global Resources.

l also read about thieves drilling holes in pipelines to steal volitiale liquids and ‘cremating’ over 180. By just one “Darwin Award Winner” who lit a cigarette. Google:: Darwin Awards. Grumps

My interest is still on the issue of education for transformation. Please our dear leaders come up with measures to ensure that every one gains from the education scheme. Think of the disabled also as people who need education for their transformation. Train manpower for them through award of scholarships especially in special education neeeds. I am one those people who would sponsor myself for this course if it was being offered in Uganda but since it does not exist please give a hand so that we are able to assist our disabled brothers and sisters. Otherwise there is no way we can transform while one group is being left behind. Those interested in this matter for discussion or giving a hand in terms of scholarships in
special education needs can reach me on email: kats2k2004@yahoo.co.uk or
    Telephone +256 (0) 782 502425.

    Hi All-

l am, happily, receiving E-mails from ‘Gentle Readers/Posters’ in this forum.

Give me time to respond, away this forum, as what is sent to me, is considered very private.

However, l do reserve the ‘right’ to give some of my answers, for general use, also using privacy issues, for indivduals.

Since l donot live in a ‘Dictator/Censcurship Nation’ then l do have to find some balance. Am l becoming a “web Master”??? LOLOLOL. Nope.

Since this Forum isnot into ‘Any foul use’, and isnot conerned about spelling and other such, then real Web Master isnot having much of a job.

Just remember, Posters and E-mailers, that l live in the most wealthy part of Canada.

This didnot occur by living off “National Gov’t”.

In Fact, National Gov’t provided some means to get this wealth. The ‘Rest’ was done by ‘Hardwork’ and exceptional ‘Local Leaders’. Grumps

1.whose money is being used in chogm?if british, will ugandans have to pay for it later?
2.i have not heard about chogm address issues like use of nuclear weapons, where are you my dears?Do you wait for a bomb to address such?

  • Posted by douglass mcnicol-aka grumples42 - 23rd November

    Hi All-

Well, PM Harper has arrived and what a bombshell has been delivered by a ‘Commonwealth with Teeth’.

IMHO, it is about time that ‘WE Seniors’ in this oldest surviving Trade Empire, got tough with the ‘children’ who are nothing but squabblers and are squandering their birth-rights to govern.

Not this hasnot happened in the History of Empire, but, we have changed and not only survived, but are thriving.

Anyway, what l am, finally, getting from the Gov’t Minions is that this Conference is getting down to do what they are paid for.

How the other delegates are accepting this is, is what Forums are for. Grumps

  • Posted by semugoma - 23rd November

    Not fair,
    the Chogm delegates to show
    a city empty of people.
    Kampala, a Ghost,
    beautiful in her nakedness

    Not fair to hide,
    Kampala’s living vibrancy;
    showing only her beautiful bones
    however they be sanitized clean.

    Hi All-

Well ‘the cats are truly among the pidgeons’.

Feel ’smug’ Commonwealth Nations, about ‘Canada’ being ‘Anti-Kyoto’

BUT- l would ’suggest-with respect’ that Gentle Readers’ look at just Western-Canada/Northern Western USA and understand how easy it is for Canadian Industry to move ‘South’ and prosper.

Since ENERGY SUPPLY is:equal. What is the incentive??

    TAXES!!!

Just think about a ‘peaceful Africa’ and then economic forces can come into play.

How many ports can Africa really sustain???

Probably not more than Western-North America:: 10 (Mexico is trying to get::: 1. China has 4 and building 2 more. British Columbia has 1 more port to develop, making 3. USA can make 2 more, on West Coast, making 7.) Grumps

    Hi All-

Where are the ‘opinions’ from Forum Members about the inter-action that took place in Ughanda????

l realize, that ‘Canada’ wasnot what was expected, but, understand too, that North Americans are losing patience with Africa.

A Forum Member sent me an E-Mail with a very good question. The reply is very long, and my ‘Good Wife’( who writes my E-mails) is having trouble reading my ‘barely legible’ scribbling. Have patience.

On another note, Envirement Canada is predicting the coldest winter in 15 years, for Canada.

The Canadian Rocky Winter Playgrounds, are hosting over 20 World Cup Events.

The temp in Calgary is:: -21C. Grumps
